Athens man killed in Saturday shooting identified, teenager arrested

September 9 – An Athens man found shot to death in the grass outside the Fifth Avenue Apartments on Saturday has been identified by the Limestone County Coroner and the 17-year-old has been charged with murder.

Ladevine Adre Crutcher, 33, was shot “multiple times” and pronounced dead at the scene, according to coroner Mike West.

Athens police said they received several 911 calls reporting a shooting at the apartment complex in the 700 block of Fifth Avenue just before 3 p.m. Saturday. Officers responding to the call found Crutcher in the grass and launched a shooting investigation.

At about the same time, a man arrived at Athens-Limestone Hospital in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to police. Police determined he had been shot in the leg on the same grassy area where Crutcher was shot. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Twenty minutes after the investigation began, a man was detained for questioning, Athens police said. On Monday, Captain Brett Constable confirmed that a 17-year-old was charged with murder in connection with Crutcher’s death on Saturday night. The teen, whose identity authorities are not releasing, remained in the Limestone County Jail pending an Aniah’s Law hearing.
