A’ja Wilson’s 1,000-point season finally ends the WNBA MVP debate

A’ja Wilson’s 1,000-point season finally ends the WNBA MVP debate

On Sunday, the Las Vegas Aces hosted the Connecticut Sun at the Michelob ULTRA Arena for an important game for the WNBA playoff spot.

A’ja Wilson, despite missing one game, had 971 points on the season before Sunday’s game. She was 29 points shy of the first 1,000-point season in league history, so fans assumed she would reach that historic milestone in the next three games.

But Wilson wasted no time and scored exactly 29 points against the Sun, reaching the previously unmatched millennium mark.

The basket came with 1:57 minutes left in the Aces’ 84-71 win over Connecticut, after Wilson converted a 11-foot pull-up jumper with an assist from Jackie Young.

Wilson is a surefire MVP candidate this season and has had one of the most impressive individual seasons the W has ever seen.

She has 155 more points than the next best scorer, 103 more defensive rebounds than the second best player in the league and 16 more blocks than the next best player. With two blocks in the last two games, she would reach 100 blocks this season.

To illustrate how monumental this achievement is, Wilson’s 2024 season produced more points than 63.2 percent of all WNBA players in their entire career. This season alone would put Wilson at 260th on the all-time points list.

After Sunday, Wilson is 31st on the WNBA’s all-time scoring list. If she can continue to put together seasons like this, it won’t be long before she’s challenging players like Diana Taurasi.
