Washington: US President Joe Biden said “there is no place for political violence or violence of any kind in our country” and praised police for helping to ensure former President Trump’s safety during Sunday’s shooting, which investigators said was “an apparent assassination attempt” on the Republican presidential candidate.

“As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence, or violence at all, in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that the Secret Service has all the resources, capabilities and protections necessary to ensure the former president’s continued safety,” Biden said after being briefed on the shooting at Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

In a statement, he said: “I was briefed by my team on what federal law enforcement is investigating today as a possible assassination attempt against former President Trump. A suspect is in custody, and I commend the work of the Secret Service and its law enforcement partners for their vigilance and efforts to protect the former President and those around him. I am relieved that the former President is unharmed. This incident is currently under investigation as law enforcement gathers more details about what happened.”

Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, has been identified in US media reports as the man who allegedly tried to kill former President Donald Trump on Sunday as he played golf at his golf course in Florida.

Routh is said to have lived in Hawaii, worked as a construction worker in North Carolina and attempted to recruit fighters to assist Ukraine in its defense against Russian invasions.

The FBI said it was investigating the incident as an “attempted murder.”

“The FBI has responded to West Palm Beach, Florida, and is apparently investigating an assassination attempt against former President Trump,” the agency said in a statement.

Investigators found an AK-47-style rifle, two backpacks filled with ceramic tiles and a GoPro camera that he had left behind.

This was the second assassination attempt on Trump in just over two months. The first occurred on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. He was shot in the right ear. The gunman, who acted alone, was killed by a police sniper.

The incident on Sunday occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

Investigators said a Secret Service agent walking ahead of the former president to secure the area noticed a gun sticking out of a section of thick foliage at the edge of the golf course. The agent was walking in that direction and it was not yet clear if the suspect opened fire. But he was about 300 to 450 yards behind — between the fifth and sixth holes — which was not out of range of the rifle.

According to investigators, a witness saw the suspect and took a photo of the car and license plate. Shortly thereafter, the suspect was stopped and taken into custody.

“Gunshots were fired near me, but before the rumor mill gets out of control, I want you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND I AM FINE!” Trump said in a statement.

“Nothing will stop me. I will NEVER GIVE UP!”

The White House said in a separate statement that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, both in Washington DC, had been informed.

“The President and Vice President have been briefed on the security incident at Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump played golf. They are relieved to know that he is safe. Their team will provide them with regular updates.”

Harris said in a post on X that she was “glad” the former president was safe.

“I have been informed of reports that shots were fired near former President Trump and his Florida estate, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”

The shooting is said to have taken place near his golf course in Palm Beach.

President Trump was on course and shots were fired from the surrounding trees, CNN reported.

US intelligence personnel returned fire in that direction.
