Florida will conduct a parallel investigation into “attempted murder”

Governor Ron DeSantis announced Sunday that the state’s law enforcement authorities will also investigate the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump in Palm Beach County.

A suspected gunman was in the custody of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The Republican presidential candidate was unharmed in the shooting at about 1:30 p.m. while he was playing golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

“The people have a right to know the truth about the would-be assassin and how he was able to get within 1,500 feet of the former president and current Republican nominee,” DeSantis wrote on X.

The FBI, the agency leading the investigation into the “apparent” attempted murder, has not yet released the suspect’s identity. Law enforcement sources told ABC News and the Associated Press that the suspect in custody is Ryan Wesley Routh. CNN reported that Routh, 58, of Kaawa, Hawaii, has only a few years of criminal history and lives in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The shooting came about two months after U.S. intelligence officials killed a man who fired a rifle in an attempt to assassinate Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania. The bullet grazed Trump’s ear.

Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder said officers arrested the suspect near Palm City after Palm Beach County officials issued a “highly urgent” BOLO (loose loitering order) for a black Nissan SUV.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the suspect fled, leaving behind a rifle with a scope, two backpacks with ceramic tiles in them and a GoPro camera.
