Not long ago, we assumed that Apple would use the “It’s Glowtime” keynote last week to announce a new Apple Watch SE 3 alongside the Apple Watch 10. We now know that Apple had other plans. Nevertheless, the upcoming Apple Watch SE is now appearing in the rumor mill again.

Apple Watch SE 3 with plastic case still in development

Just in time for the weekend, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has published the latest edition of his PowerOn newsletter. In it, he discusses, among other things, the Apple Watch SE 3. Gurman writes

A new plastic-cased Apple Watch SE is still in development. Earlier this year, I reported that Apple was working on a plastic version of the Apple Watch SE in bolder colors. The idea is to potentially lower the price by using a cheaper material, while also making the device more kid-friendly. This could be a good time: Schools in the US and elsewhere are banning children from using smartphones, and Apple is positioning its smartwatch as an alternative.

Although a new Apple Watch SE wasn’t part of last week’s keynote, I’m told the product remains in development — possibly for next year. Apple’s production teams have encountered some cost and quality issues with the switch to plastic, but they may have more free rein to resolve the issues now that the transition from steel to titanium is complete on higher-end watches. Aside from the use of plastic, I expect the new SE to include a processor upgrade. The current SE is stuck at 2020s-era speeds.
