Shooting in the Bronx: Latest shooting in a number of boroughs leaves one dead and one injured; activists and citizens call for an end to gun violence

THE BRONX (WABC) — The latest in a series of shootings in the Bronx has left one man dead and another injured.

Police responded around 9:30 p.m. Saturday to reports that a person had been shot at the corner of Sheridan Avenue and McClellan Street.

Upon arrival, officers found Sakou Saho, 31, of the Bronx, with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Emergency responders took Saho to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 49-year-old man was also found at the crime scene with a graze wound on his stomach. He was also taken to hospital for treatment and is in a stable condition.

Authorities are still trying to determine what led to the shooting.

The incident came after several shootings occurred across the district over the past week.

On Friday, three shootings occurred within a few hours of each other, leaving one person dead and two others injured.

The first shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Friday in the Mount Hope neighborhood of the Bronx. Police responded to a 911 call reporting a person shot along Anthony Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a 24-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds to his back. Emergency responders took the victim to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In the second shooting, a 44-year-old man was shot twice in the torso in Morris Park along Williamsbridge Road around 11:30 p.m., according to police. The third shooting occurred just before midnight in the Tremont section of the Bronx, where a 42-year-old man was shot in a corner of East 180th Street and Grand Concourse.

The group Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence took to the streets Saturday night to protest the suffering and fear that community members have recently faced.

The activist group met at the corner of East 180th Street and Creston Avenue, where 32-year-old Rafael Vasquez was fatally shot in the face and back on September 11. The next day, police arrested 32-year-old Kelvin Mata in connection with the fatal shooting.

“Some community members are afraid to go outside because of the shootings, but others unfortunately think that’s normal,” said Jeremy Molina of the group. “And that’s exactly what we’re here to do: try to change that norm. It’s not normal to hear gunshots.”

Not far from where Vasquez was shot, a 35-year-old man was shot the night before.

The organization hopes to offer people a way out of the vicious cycle of violence by providing support in a positive direction, for example through vocational training and education.
