The match soon turned in Wright’s favour. He broke Gurney in the first leg with a 20-darter and then doubled the lead with a 14-darter. Leg three went to Gurney before Wright took a 17-darter and an 18-darter to take a 4-1 lead at the break.

Gurney missed a chance at double 18 after the break to reduce the deficit to 4-2. Wright took advantage of the opportunity and made it 5-1 with a 14-darter.
