City of Ekurhuleni claims exposed shaft in Glen Austin repaired

City of Ekurhuleni spokesman Zweli Dlamini said the exposed shaft in Glen Austin was repaired on September 4.

When the newspaper investigated on September 9 and 10, it was found that the leaking shaft had been repaired, but the deep excavation was still exposed and not filled in. The excavations are about two feet deep and are located on a busy Dale Road in Glen Austin.

In a written response, Dlamini said the city was aware of the open excavations and that they were covered by a safety net.

When asked what exactly the team was repairing and why they left the manhole open while the water was running down the street, he said, “The team opened the manhole to investigate the water leak in the main line and to obtain the materials needed for the repairs. The repairs were completed on September 4.”

On 9 September, Dlamini was contacted again about the deep excavations discovered there.

However, when asked why the shaft was still not closed, he did not give a clear answer by the time of going to press.

The Midrand Reporter reported on the shaft, which is located not far from the Dale Road Trench and which took the city more than six months to repair, in the article “Another Dale Road Trench disaster unfolds”, [Week ending September 5]In this article, Johannesburg Water (JW) referred the paper to the city and stated that it was not responsible.
JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said the leak originated from a chamber in the Ekurhuleni Municipality. “JW has communicated with Ekurhuleni Metro about the leak. Therefore, Ekurhuleni Metro is better placed to answer your questions about the repairs and timelines.”

While Ekurhuleni Metro has taken responsibility for the leak and repaired it, we are now waiting for them to repair the excavations.
