Eberl after criticism of Musiala: Should be grateful for him

Jamal Musiala reacts to Dietmar Hamann’s criticism with a strong performance in Kiel. Sports director Max Eberl sees gratitude as necessary. Stefan Effenberg counters his fellow expert.

After astonishing criticism from Dietmar Hamann and Jamal Musiala, sporting director Max Eberl has once again highlighted the qualities of the national football player. “We should be grateful that we have such players in the Bundesliga who are allowed to play for the DFB,” said Eberl on Sport1. “I don’t think there can be two opinions on that. Jamal speaks for himself, his quality speaks for itself.” Musiala shone in FC Bayern’s 6-1 away win against Holstein, not only with his goal after 14 seconds, but also as a playmaker.

Former professional Hamann (51), known for his polarizing statements, had described Musiala in his Sky column as, among other things, a “lone player” and “often a solo entertainer.” From “Bayern’s point of view,” he would immediately swap Musiala for Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz if he could: “I would do it tomorrow.” Hamann has since put the criticism of “probably the best dribbler in Europe or the world” into perspective.

“I believe that what Didi said is very far from reality and the truth about Jamal Musiala,” said TV expert Stefan Effenberg on “Doppelpass”. Musiala is an “extraordinary player.”

FC Bayern Munich had already countered the criticism of Musiala, which they found irritating, with clear words. Eberl joked on Sunday that he took Hamann’s criticism as a good omen. “After all, he had already predicted FC Bayern’s problems with Lewandowski a few years ago – and after that FC Bayern won everything,” said Eberl.

Bayern currently believe they have secured a long-term contract with Musiala, whose contract runs until June 30, 2026. Talks are ongoing, reported sporting director Christoph Freund. “We’ve been communicating the whole time, for months.” We’ll sit down, we’ll talk. “We’ll do it calmly,” said Eberl.

In the previous season, Hamann and FC Bayern also had public disagreements. At the time, there was a dispute over former Munich coach Thomas Tuchel.
