Islanders win 3-1 against Oberthurgau in friendly

For Family Day, the ice hockey top league team Lindau Islanders hosted the Pikes EHC Oberthurgau from the fourth Swiss league on Saturday afternoon in the last test match before the start of the season and won the match 3:1 (1:0, 1:0, 1:1).

Defeat one day earlier

These are exhausting days of preseason preparation for the Lindau ice hockey stars. On Friday, the team of new coach Michael Baindl played the return match against EC Bregenzerwald and had to take a 2:3 defeat after overtime back to Lake Constance. After just 40 seconds, Lindau took the lead through Marcus Marsall, who converted a rebound. In the ninth minute, Julian Zwerger equalized. The home team made it 2:1 in the second period with a power play through Yevgen Vadyeyev, but shortly before the end of the period Jari Neugebauer equalized (39th minute). As neither team managed to score another goal in the final period, overtime had to decide the game – and here Vadyeyev again scored the winning goal for the EC – in the first minute.

Free admission on Family Day

The Islanders began their match against Oberthurgau on Saturday with a lot of pressure in front of 387 spectators, who were not only attracted by the free entry to the BPM Arena. They wanted to prove their good early form in front of their own fans. Lindau put pressure on from the first second and had their first big chance after just two minutes. Adriano Carciola rounded two defenders, but was stopped by the brilliant Swiss goalie Christoph Harder. At EVL, Tommi Steffen and Dieter Geidl share the playing time in goal. “We have two excellent goalkeepers who will be battling each other all year – that’s perfect,” said their coach Michael Baindl happily.

Zan Jezovsek has a brutal shot and is also a great runner.

After a few minutes, EHC Oberthurgau also joined in the game. John Ungemach tested Tommi Steffen, who prevented the deficit with a quick reflex. In the one and a half thirds that he played, Steffen saved ten out of ten shots that came at his goal – in the first third, however, only four pucks flew his way. By comparison: Lindau shot 14 times in the first 20 minutes at the goal of Christoph Harder, who proved to be the Islanders’ toughest opponent. But he too was powerless against the shot of the new quota player Zan Jezovsek in the 15th minute. With a power play, the home team had freed the Slovenian national player, and he thanked them with a 1-0 goal. Baindl is delighted with the new signing: “Zan brings a lot of components. He plays hard, has a brutal shot and is also a great runner.”

Geidl can also distinguish himself

And in the second period, the hosts were able to assert themselves well against their physical opponents. The fact that only one goal was scored was again down to Härter, who saved a total of 36 shots over the course of the party. The goal was again scored in the power play, but this time Andreas Farny was the shooter (26th). Just two minutes later, the guests received the next penalty, but this time the omnipresent Jezovsek only hit the left post. The Swiss reacted to the deficit with increasing severity, which led to a disagreement between Alessandro Köppel and Steffen Tölzer in the 40th minute, which the two cleared with their fists and each had to spend two minutes in the penalty box. A tenth of a second before the siren, goalie Dieter Geidl also distinguished himself when he saved a strong desperation shot from Yannik Schmalbach.

Guests put more pressure on in the final third

The final period was the guests’ strongest third, and it was here that they scored their only goal of the afternoon. Schmalbach scored with a slap shot in the 45th minute, after he had hit the post shortly before. Now the Oberthurgau team wanted more and stormed somewhat headlong towards Geidl’s goal, which led to numerous good chances for Lindau. But it was only when the Swiss pulled the goalkeeper in the last minute that they scored the redeeming goal to make it 3:1. Adriano Carciola fought for the puck on the right wing and slipped it into the empty guest goal.

50 new places

The new grandstand with 50 seats directly behind the goal was also used for the first time at Family Day. The tickets for these seats are transferable, meaning that the season ticket can be passed on without any problem, as the club reports. The Islanders’ premier league season begins on September 20th (7:30 p.m.) at EC Peiting. The Bietigheim Steelers are expected to play in the first home game on September 22nd (6 p.m.).

Overall, the Islanders’ confident performance gives hope for a good season in the top league – the only thing that needs to be improved is the utilization of opportunities. The mood under the new coach is visibly good and the new players are fitting in perfectly with the team structure.
