Michael van Gerwen has banned himself from eating steaks and baguettes because of his dental treatment. The Dutchman has already gone under the knife several times, which has caused him a lot of inconvenience.

Van Gerwen had dental surgery last year, but the problem is still ongoing and he is still in pain. He recently had another procedure and felt the effects during his World Series victory over Jonny Clayton.

“It was a struggle from the start, but I didn’t feel comfortable all day,” Van Gerwen told De Telegraaf. “In front of a home crowd you put yourself under extra pressure anyway.”

“I’ve been playing really well over the last few weeks, but I’ve been losing games despite having an average of over 100. Sure, I’ve got more left in the tank, but anything that doesn’t help you on your way up becomes a bit of a nuisance.”

Van Gerwen removed the rubber bands from his mouth just before stepping up to the oche to secure a 6-4 victory over Clayton. He spoke about his dental problems and revealed that he no longer indulges in steaks or baguettes due to the potential risks involved.

“Anyone who has ever had a root canal and knows what it feels like can tell you that this is a little boy compared to what I went through,” he said.

“It really didn’t feel good, but it has to be that way in order for it to hold together. My lower jaw is trying to get back to its old position. I had a severe underbite. I still can’t eat a steak or a tough baguette.”

Van Gerwen plans to undergo further surgery during his holiday next year, this time to fix a problem with his foot that causes discomfort when wearing shoes.

“I [need to] “I’m going to have surgery on my foot,” he added. “The cartilage is going to expand, that’s why I have a bump that doesn’t feel right in my shoe. Whenever I feel like it, I’ll have surgery. This is the best time to do it, nice and on a boat or by the pool.

“I really enjoyed the weeks off. Next year, after the match plays, I might have to go to Australia and New Zealand if I’m invited. Then I’ll be away for the whole of my children’s holidays.”

“I’ve now realized that it’s very important and very nice for me to enjoy it with my wife and children. It really was a crazy time, finally.”
