Rookies sprint even this year?

Could the rookies sprint be coming this year? A few weeks ago, a new idea was developed to give young drivers the opportunity to prove themselves in a Formula 1 car.

After the season, a sprint race will take place in Abu Dhabi, where the rookies can compete against each other. You can read all the background information here!

Severe Formula 2 crash

Formula 2 is currently racing in Baku and there was a serious crash at the start. A car stopped at the start and a rear-end collision occurred, in which the young German driver Oliver Goethe was also involved.

The race has just been stopped, but fortunately all the drivers involved were uninjured. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that there are no more serious accidents today.

Punishment unavoidable

As a reminder, Lewis Hamilton suffered an engine failure at the very beginning of the season in Australia, so it was clear that he would need an additional power source at some point during the year.

Now Mercedes has also decided to impose the inevitable grid penalty here in Baku – probably in the hope that they will be able to overtake on the long straights here.

Hamilton starts from the pit lane

Fresh information from Baku: Lewis Hamilton has received a new engine. This means he will have to start today’s race from the pit lane, as he had already reached the maximum permitted. His set-up has also been modified.

He qualified in seventh place, meaning all drivers behind him moved up one position on the starting grid.

Esteban Ocon also got a new engine. But it doesn’t really matter for him, because he qualified last anyway.

39 years ago today…

… the 1985 Belgian Grand Prix took place – or rather the second part of it. The Grand Prix in Spa had actually already started in June! You can find out all the background information about the strange Formula 1 race with two weekends here:

strategy

We take the obligatory look at the strategy for the race. Pirelli normally expects a one-stop race, either on medium-hard or hard-medium. According to the Italians, the soft tyre will not play a role.

However, there is a good chance that there will be (at least) one safety car in Baku. And then a two-stopper could become interesting again (depending on the timing). Here is the overview:

Why Aston Martin still needs time

Aston Martin will be at the forefront of Formula 1 from 2026. The fact that it probably won’t work out before then is not only due to the fact that Adrian Newey will not start at Silverstone until March 2025.

“There is always a certain time lag between a commitment and when it becomes reality. This also applies to the wind tunnel, which we have to get up and running first,” explains team boss Mike Krack at Heaven.

“That will take a little while. The same goes for the simulator. These are all things that take a little time and then you have to see how the responsibilities are distributed, who is responsible for what.”

“I believe that the most important thing in the end is that we build a structure in which everyone can contribute their part, in which everyone can give their best or get the best out of it,” says Krack.

Lawrence Stroll also understands this. “He understands it like no one else,” Krack emphasizes, and explains: “He won’t say that.” […] But secretly he also knows that this won’t work like a switch.

“The pressure is there, and the pressure must remain there, to make this happen as quickly as possible. But I think he is very realistic,” said Krack.
