In a fast-paced three-hour thriller, Thiago Monteiro sealed Brazil’s overall victory against Belgium.

The Brazilians showed true fighting spirit in their last group match, trying to grasp the last straw to advance. The first match was played by youngster Joao Fonseca, who beat Belgian Raphael Collignon 6:3, 6:7 (2), 6:3 after just under two hours. The match between Thiago Monteiro and the previously unbeaten Zizou Bergs was even more dramatic. After 2 hours and 44 minutes, the 30-year-old Monteiro won 4:6, 7:6 (5), 7:5, thus securing the overall victory for the Brazilian team.

At least the current format of the Davis Cup finals cannot be denied the greater importance of doubles, because in this encounter too the outcome was decisive for the chances of progressing. In a thoroughly exciting match, the Belgian duo Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen defeated the Brazilian pairing Rafael Matos/Felipe Meligeni Alves 6:3, 3:6, 6:4.

In their final match against the Netherlands, the Tifosi will therefore only influence which of the other three teams in Group A will also make it to the quarter-finals.
