Field of participants, top seeds, draw and opponents of the Austrians

BAD WALTERSDORF/STYRIA. The field of participants at the ATP 125 Challenger in Bad Waltersdorf is impressive. No fewer than four top 100 players are taking part. The Austrians, led by Davis Cup players Filip Misolic and Lukas Neumayer, were spared the really tough opponents. A total of thirteen local players are playing in the tournament in Styria.

Here is an overview of the participants in the Bad Waltersdorf Trophy:

Munar ranked number one

The field is led by Spaniard Jaume Munar (ATP 74), followed by Thiago Monteiro (ATP 76) and Federico Coria (ATP 79). Number four, Thiago Seyboth Wild (ATP 98), may be remembered by some from the tournament in Kitzbühel. The Brazilian reached the quarterfinals there this year.

Five Austrians in the main competition

Although the Austrians were spared duels against the top laws in the first round, the domestic players still faced strong opponents:

Filip Misolic is the best-placed Austrian in the world rankings at the tournament in Styria. The man from Graz was drawn against Jerome Kym (ATP 151). The Swiss has already won two Challenger tournaments.

Lukas Neumayer (ATP 262) has to compete against the experienced Albert Ramos-Vinolas (ATP 126). The Spaniard was already number 17 in the world rankings in 2017.

Last year’s finalist Dennis Novak (ATP 246) will face a qualifier in the opening match. Young hopeful Joel Schwärzler (378) will play against the Spaniard Carlos Taberner (ATP 213). Tyrolean Sandro Kopp (ATP 350), like Schwärzler, has a wild card, and will play against last year’s Tulln winner Vit Kopriva (ATP 143) in the first round.

Other interesting players in the tournament

There are a number of other interesting players in the tournament’s starting field, for example the tournament’s number six: Laszlo Djere (ATP 121) may be remembered by some from last year, when he lost to Dominic Thiem in a marathon match in the semifinals of Kitzbühel, after having missed five match points. Djere was already number 27 in the world rankings.

Last year’s winner Andrea Pellegrino (ATP 175) will be back in Bad Waltersdorf. However, defending his title will be difficult given the field of starters. Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, who sensationally reached the quarter-finals in Kitzbühel, is also in the main competition of the tournament in Styria.

Eight Austrians compete in the qualification

It is expected that more Austrians will reach the main draw, as no fewer than eight Austrian tennis players are competing in the qualification round. Syl Gaxherri, Sebastian Sorger, Gerald Melzer, Maximilian Neuchrist, Matthias Ujvary, Lucas Miedler, David Pichler and Neil Oberleitner need two wins for a place in the main draw.
