2. Bundesliga: 1. FC Köln misses jump to promotion spot

Bundesliga relegated team 1. FC Köln missed the chance to get a promotion spot to the second division.

After two victories, 1. FC Köln lost 1:2 (0:0) against 1. FC Magdeburg on Saturday evening despite clear superiority and a 1:0 lead, which catapulted the team into second place.

Damion Downs (49th) scored the well-deserved 1-0 for FC, but Falko Michel (66th) and Jean Hugonet (83rd) turned the game in the visitors’ favor. After their second home defeat of the season, Cologne slipped to seventh place – four points behind Magdeburg.

Cologne clearly dominated the first half, recording 18 shots on goal:2, but failed to capitalize on their clear superiority.

Mohammed El Hankouri thwarted FC’s biggest chance when he cleared a cross from Linton Maina just before Tim Lemperle was ready to score and deflected the ball onto the post (18′).

Shortly after the break, the hosts rewarded themselves: After a mistake in Magdeburg’s build-up play, Downs successfully completed a successful combination via Lemperle and Maina to take the well-deserved lead – with the 20th shot on goal.

The equalizer came completely unexpectedly: After a cross from the strong El Hankouri, substitute Michel headed in to make it 1-1. Then Hugonet scored with a deflected shot on his second attempt.
