FC Bayern Munich shone in the top Bundesliga match against Holstein Kiel. Individual reviews including grades for the gala performance.

Kiel – What a performance by FC Bayern Munich at Holstein Kiel! Jamal Musiala opened the scoring gala for the record champions in the far north after just 14 seconds. Harry Kane made it 2-0 after seven minutes, before Jamal Musiala forced another Kiel own goal six minutes later. Kane made the final decision just before half-time (43′).

After the break, Michael Olise, who came on for Serge Gnabry, increased the score even further (65th minute). The only blemish: Armin Gigovic scored Kiel’s consolation goal after 85 minutes after Konrad Laimer had made a bad pass. The second half went to Munich, however, because Kane converted a penalty he himself had caused to make the final score 6-1 (90th minute +1).

The Munich team had no trouble against the newly promoted team. The quality of the squad was already evident on the bench before the party: Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, Mathys Tel, Michael Olise, Konrad Laimer, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Alphonso Davies, Eric Dier and Sven Ulreich were available to coach Vincent Kompany as additional options.

FC Bayern without Leon Goretzka at Holstein Kiel

There was not even room for Leon Goretzka in the squad – the coach and sports director Max Eberl even had to explain the situation before the party on Heaven-Explain the microphone.

How did Goretzka’s colleagues perform on the pitch? The individual reviews and grades for the FCB gala.

Thomas Tuchel: He came out of an international break more rested than he has in a long time. And Kiel also made sure that he stayed a little rested. He had almost nothing to do for 45 minutes, but then had to be awake for a few minutes. With a view to the Champions League on Tuesday, that might be a good thing. Things got hectic for him in the closing stages. Note: 3

Sacha Boey: Was allowed back into the starting eleven because Vincent Kompany – unlike against Freiburg two weeks ago – used two sixes and thus moved Joshua Kimmich. Didn’t have to concentrate too much on defensive tasks and often let the ball circulate quite well with his teammates and front men. Solid performance, nothing more, nothing less. Note: 3 (from 64. Alphonso Davies: oB)

Dayot Upamecano: He is part of the regular central defence and did a solid job. When things got loud after half an hour, he cleverly stopped the attack. The message got across: There’s no getting past this. With the exception of Kiel’s consolation goal. Note: 2

Minjae Kim: He had a long journey under his belt, but had to get back to work two days after his return from Seoul. He tried to get a foot in the door with some of the Kiel players and was usually there when things got tricky. Note: 2

Raphael Guerreiro: He got stuck at left back – much to the chagrin of Alphonso Davies. He played a solid game, but was inconspicuous. Which also means that he didn’t make any major mistakes. Note: 3 (64. Konrad Laimer: oB)

Strong Bayern in Kiel

Joshua Kimmich: Kompany had already indicated that it had “zero” impact on him, and was replaced by national coach Julian Nagelsmann with Kimmich. That’s why he put him back in front of the defense and not at right back. There he did his job well, with eyes both forward and backward. Note: 2

Joao Palhinha: Is it a good or bad sign that Palhinha made his debut in the starting eleven for FC Bayern against Kiel? We won’t know until Tuesday, when the Champions League begins against Zagreb. He played well and bravely stopped a Kiel attack in midfield shortly before half-time. He celebrated the move himself, even though it was tough. A successful debut, even if he was given an unnecessary yellow card later on. Note: 3

Serge Gnabry: He’s something of a long-term player in the offense and was able to quickly register an assist. A long leg was enough to serve Kane before the 2-0. He had the 4-0 on his feet after a Kimmich corner when less than 25 minutes had been played. He set it up for Kane. Was an asset with many good opportunities. Note: 2 (from 46. Michael Olise: It took him a while to get as good as the attackers he replaced. But after he had repeatedly shown his class with lateral shifts, crosses and quick runs, he struck. The 5-0 is down to the Frenchman. Quick-thinking, bottom left. Note: 2)

Two goals for Bayern stars: But Musiala and Kane stand out

Jamal Musiala: He let exactly 14 seconds pass to score the third fastest goal in Bundesliga history and send a greeting to chief critic Didi Hamann. A long ball from Neuer reached the national player via a detour, who shot flat and precisely from 16 meters to the bottom left. 1-0 – no chance for Kiel keeper Weiner. And can you really blame him for finishing off a dribble through the entire Kiel defense like he did before the 3-0? In the end it was an own goal by Remberg, but the move was world class for Musiala. He was allowed to go off at half-time and rest. Note: 1 (from 46. Thomas Mueller: Had to fill a big gap – after THAT performance. Did it solidly as usual. Active, courageous, loud – only this time without any tangible results. Note: 3)

Kingsley Coman: Didn’t have a hand in any goals in the first half of his first start, but kept coming forward at speed. He also had a few good moves after the break, but not one that was compelling. Kiel’s keeper had his foot on the best of them. (59′). He played a big part in the 5-0 goal, because he passed to Davies, whose shot was saved by keeper Weiner and landed at goal scorer Olise. Note: 3 (from 75. Tel oB)

Harry Kane: He was involved in the 1-0 goal after 14 seconds and then scored the 2-0 goal himself in the 7th minute. The 31-year-old coolly converted a Gnabry ball – and thus scored early against the current 17th-ranked Bundesliga team. So he could be forgiven for missing a ball (26th minute). Especially as he scored again before half-time (43rd minute). After the penalty to make it 6-1 in the final minute, he has four goals this season – he needs to beat the 36 from the previous season.
