Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said on Saturday (September 14, 2024) that it is the job of the police and intelligence agencies to identify and address new national security challenges such as drugs, illegal drones and online fraud before they become bigger problems.

Mr. Shah chaired the concluding session of the two-day conference on national security strategies. He proposed a detailed strategy to strengthen counter-terrorism efforts, including cooperation with international agencies and enhancing capacity to prevent terrorist financing. He stressed the need for increased cooperation and coordination between the National Investigation Agency and state counter-terrorism units to strengthen the counter-terrorism architecture. Mr. Shah lauded the success of efforts to combat Maoism, admonished states and urged them to remain vigilant.

Mr Shah appealed to state directors general of police to work towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a prosperous, strong and developed India by 2047. He stressed that significant progress had been made in addressing long-standing national security issues such as Jammu and Kashmir, left-wing extremism and the North East.

On the implementation of the three new penal laws, the Home Minister urged the Directors General to protect the constitutional rights of citizens and provide justice to victims in a speedy and timely manner. He stressed that the transformative impact of the new penal laws can only be achieved through a change in mindset, use of technology and seamless coordination. He directed the Directors General to set up teams of young police officers to ensure implementation of the new penal laws in letter and spirit.

The Home Minister urged young police officers to develop strategic solutions to combat the entire spectrum of fraudulent financial transactions from crypto to hawala. He urged all police chiefs to strengthen the internal security architecture through a multi-dimensional approach, data analytics and new techniques and ensure the use of databases maintained by central authorities.
