Many colorful flags are flying in Wismar: The Hanseatic city is starting Christopher Street Day for the first time with a parade, thus celebrating the rights of the queer community.

Around 2,000 people gathered on the market square in Wismar on Sunday evening. They celebrated the first Christopher Street Day (CSD) in the Hanseatic city with music, speeches, shows and a parade. According to the police, there were also people from the right and left camps among the mostly colorfully dressed revelers. Right-wing extremist groups are also said to have met unannounced with around 200 people in the Lindengarten. When the parade passed the station forecourt, there were tumultuous incidents. Both sides were separated by numerous police officers. There were no major clashes, according to a police spokeswoman. A violation of the assembly law is being investigated.

Drese opposes disruptive actions

Social Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD) was on the market square and said of the disruptive actions that the state government would not accept that people were discriminated against and threatened because of their sexual identity or sexual orientation. At the CSD, demonstrators celebrate the rights of queer people worldwide, including gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people.

Rights of queer people

Christopher Street Day originates from America and commemorates the uprisings of the queer community on Christopher Street in New York in 1969. The worldwide CSD demonstrations are about the equality of homosexual, transsexual, bisexual, queer and intersex people.
