Fissette and Osaka are working together in two chapters – initially from 2019 to the summer of 2022. They found each other again last summer when Osaka began training for her return to the tennis stage after the birth of her daughter Shai. The Japanese won two of her four Grand Slam titles under Fissette (US Open 2020 and Australian Open 2021). She also reached the finals of the 2020 Cincinnati Open and the 2022 Miami Open with her ex-coach.

On Friday, the former world number one informed her fans about the separation via Instagram. “[Vier] Years, [zwei] Slams and a whole lot of memories,” Osaka wrote in her Instagram story. “Thank you Wim for being a great coach and an even greater person. I wish you all the best.” The Japanese woman started her comeback on the WTA tour in January. She managed six wins against top 20 players, but the really big successes – as Osaka was used to – failed to materialize. The Japanese woman made it to just two quarterfinals, and was eliminated in the second round at the US Open. That is about to change – without coach Fissette. “I feel like I’ve worked a lot harder than I ever have in my life, so something has to come of it,” added the Grand Slam winner. “Well, it doesn’t have to, but I think it will.”
