Eva Lys from Hamburg has reached the semifinals of the WTA tournament in Monastir, Tunisia. The 22-year-old won the round of the best eight with 7:5, 6:3 against the Turkish Zeynep Sönmez.

She can now hope to make it to her first WTA Tour final on Saturday evening. Her next opponent is the English qualifier Sonay Kartal, who won in two sets against the Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtseva.

However, the Italian Lucia Bronzetti is likely to be the favorite in the round of the last four. The 25-year-old from Rimini is the last remaining seed in Monastir – she lost in two clear sets to eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open. Bronzetti will face Slovakian Rebecca Sramkova in the semifinals.

Push through victory against last year’s winner Mertens

Lys had already defeated number one seed Elise Mertens from Belgium in the round of 16 of the hard court event, who also won the tournament in Tunisia in the past two years.

At the US Open, Lys, who is currently ranked 126th in the world, was eliminated in the first round after qualifying.
