London mayor warns against misinformation

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT)

The manhunt for Joseph Couch, the suspect in the mass murder on I-75, enters its seventh day.

Kentucky State Police officials said in a press conference Thursday that they are using all necessary resources, including cadaver dogs, to search for Couch in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

London Mayor Randall Weddle warned community members not to believe everything they read on social media.

“Releasing unverified information can inadvertently hinder our law enforcement agencies who are working hard to protect us. If there were important news, I trust our local, state and federal authorities would communicate it through official channels, whether it be a press conference or a statement,” Weddle said.

Governor Andy Beshear visited Laurel County for the first time since the shooting on Thursday for a press conference.

The governor thanked law enforcement for their help in the search and gave an update on the status of the five victims.

“Grateful for the cooperation. Knowing that justice and safety is the ultimate goal of all the different looking uniforms behind me, the goal of all is the same, to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.”

Four of the five victims have already been released from the hospital, but all are expected to survive.
