Is “Are You the Right One?” the best dating show or just annoying?

Is “Are You the Right One?” the best dating show or just annoying?

There are many of them, you either like them or you don’t: dating shows. Each one of them has its advantages and disadvantages, but is there a perfect love format?

RTL

Dating shows are an integral part of today’s TV landscape. They come in all kinds of forms – particularly trashy or stylish and stiff. Each show has special characteristics that make it indestructible. But is there one dating show that combines everything?

“Are You The One?”: This is what the dating show is about

In 2020, “Are You The One?” was broadcast for the first time in Germany. The dating show was an absolute surprise success, so that further seasons quickly followed. In addition, the VIP spin-off “Are You The One – Realitystars in Love” came shortly afterwards. With a total of five normal seasons and four VIP seasons, the show is A real must-see for trash TV fans.

The concept is quite simple. 10 single men and 10 single women move into a villa and have to Find your perfect match. Beforehand, all candidates had to fill out questionnaires on topics such as passion, relationships and life goals. Experts then assign the women and men to their perfect matches based on scientific criteria. If every single person finds their perfect match, the group will receive prize money of 200,000 euros at the end.

There are various ways to find out whether someone is one of these perfect pairings. For example, participants can send a man and a woman into the so-called “matchbox” ten times. There, it is checked whether they are a “perfect match”. There are also ten “matching nights” in which those looking for love get together in pairs and are shown with the help of lights how many “perfect matches” are sitting among them.

“Are you the right one?” combines many advantages and disadvantages of different dating shows

“Are You The One?” has potential: But does the show fail because of the trash factor?

Actually, “Are You The One?” all the parameters of the most diverse dating shows that make the hearts of united trash TV fans beat faster. Young, love-hungry male and female singles live together in a villa for weeks and have to compete against each other in various games. If this concept sounds familiar, you’re absolutely right. It sounds a lot like “Love Island”. There are also parties, alcohol en masse and the “Boom Boom Room” à la “Ex on the Beach”. In addition to all this, the participants also have to find their perfect partner through conversations, who has been tailored to them according to a “marriage at first sight” principle. A dream of entertainment for fans: You can guess in front of the TV screen who will be a good match for whom in the end and quickly lose your nerve when you get excited if the completely wrong candidates are sitting next to each other.

But with all of this, the trash factor must not be ignored, which has unfortunately increased enormously in recent years. Admittedly, who doesn’t like to watch people make completely wrong decisions and then turn them into a Hollywood-worthy drama. But these days, “Are You The One?” is unfortunately called turned into a single drinking and fucking party, where the focus is completely lost. Nobody probably believes that anyone will walk out of the format with their true love. But in past seasons it has worked or been tried two or three times. This makes it difficult for the viewerto follow the show when everyone is making out with everyone else and you lose track of who is really getting along.

The women are never allowed to wear more than a micro bikini that just covers the bare essentials, and the men have nothing more in their suitcases than swimming trunks and shirts – none of which seem to have any buttons. Things only get really primitive at the games and parties. The parties have a theme of “schoolgirls”, “uniforms” or some other slogan that allows participants to wear as little clothing as possible. During the games, the men have to shape their best parts with play dough and the women have to kneel in front of the men and nibble on a sugar bead chain in their crotch. When the women and men have to spit liquids into each other’s mouths, your hair stands on end rather than being fun. Shows like “Prominent trenn” or “#CoupleChallenge” show how couple games can be fun and still cause a lot of excitement. Today, the participants are only at “seaaaaase tiime” and that’s exactly what you notice, unfortunately. Artificially created dramas and relationships are no longer entertaining in the long run. The authenticity that is so important in reality TV is increasingly being lost.

Conclusion? We’ll tune in anyway

The show is of course following the trend, which is increasingly becoming trashy. It is questionable whether the concept of the show will ever change. Despite everything, you have to admit that you unintentionally enjoy the fate of the candidates and no one wants to see “Are You The One?” Kids – as the last Normalo season was called internally due to the lack of entertainment. And let’s be honest: We’ll be back on one way or another.
