Darts: “I firmly believe I can win a tournament on the seniors tour” – Chris Mason looks ahead to the World Seniors Matchplay

The World Seniors Matchplay will take place in York, England, on October 4 and 5. Chris Mason will face Neil Duff in the first round.

Mason was initially active with the BDO for many years and moved permanently to the PDC in 2002. He last played at the Darts World Championship in 2009. “In 2010 I started working for the media (commentator/analyst). I really enjoyed it right away and I was a bit tired of playing on the Pro Tour. That’s why I signed up for the PDC for good in 2012,” said Mason.

Mace the Ace was involved in an infamous incident in 2007. Mason and Phil Taylor met in the round of 16 of the World Darts Championship. There was a lot of controversy about this match beforehand, as Mason had been verbally abusing Taylor in the newspapers. When Taylor finally won the match 4-0, it quickly came to a showdown between the two men on stage. “I apologised for it afterwards. I was very frustrated at the time and that played a role in my decision to retire later on. By the way, Phil and I understand each other very well now, we live barely ten minutes away from each other and see each other regularly.”

World Senior Darts Tour

Since then, Mason was out of action for a long time until he made his comeback on the World Seniors Darts Tour (WSDT) about two years ago. “I wanted to compete again and these tournaments are fantastically well organized. The level there is still particularly high, though, and you can’t do anything there without training.”

Senior World Championship

In the first round of the World Seniors Matchplay, Mason will face Neil Duff. “I’m a huge snooker fan and the UK Championship is held every year at the Barbican Centre in York, it’s an iconic venue and a privilege to play there. Neil is obviously a stronger opponent, he’s not number one in the WDF for nothing, but I firmly believe in my chances. What’s more, I firmly believe I can win a senior tour tournament.

“But success won’t come overnight, I’ll have to train hard for it,” Mason continued. “I run a pub with my girlfriend Charlotte, we have several dartboards there, and there’s no excuse not to train (laughs).”
