Collapse of a road junction in Mumbai

What is the story

A road collapse occurred at a street junction in Dadar, central Mumbai, on Thursday.

The incident occurred at around 11:30 am at the busy Kismat junction on Veer Savarkar Marg in Dadar West and resulted in a car tyre getting trapped in a 3 x 5 feet crater.

However, no injuries were reported in this incident.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) later confirmed that the road collapse was caused by a leak in a 66-inch thick underground pipeline.

Leak in pipeline identified as cause of road collapse

The leak was located in the lower part of the pipeline and was only discovered after further excavations for repair work, according to the BMC.

However, due to the planned water supply in the region, repair work on the pipeline was postponed and finally carried out in the evening.

The BMC stated that it would take some time to repair the pipeline and during this time it would affect water supply in the area.

With all our strength: BMC

“All possible efforts are being made to complete the task on time. If the work takes longer, there will be a disruption in water supply in G/South Ward, including NM Joshi Marg, Curry Road, Lower Parel and NM Joshi BDD, between 4 am and 7 am on September 13,” the civic body said late on Thursday.

“There will be low pressure water supply in Sane Guruji Marg. Residents are requested to observe this and cooperate by using water sparingly,” the statement said.
