Kiel (dpa/lno) – THW Kiel celebrated its first victory of the new season. In a duel between two traditional clubs, the record champions won 33:24 (17:11) at home against Frisch Auf Göppingen. The best scorers were Emil Madsen with nine goals for Kiel and Erik Persson with seven goals for Göppingen.

Kiel, who lost their opening match 27:32 to Rhein-Neckar Löwen, needed a while to find their game. It took until the fifth minute for Emil Madsen to score the first goal for the North Germans. In the 16th minute, the new signing from Denmark increased the score to 9:4 with his fifth goal.

Kiel defies personnel problems

The North Germans had some personal problems, especially in the backcourt. Madsen, the Croatian captain Domagoj Duvnjak and the Swede Eric Johansson had to bear the brunt of the burden. Linus Kutz and Henri Pabst are the only two young players to supplement the squad. Karl Wallinius, Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu and Nikola Bilyk are missing due to injury.

However, the Göppingen team lacked the means to seriously threaten the North Germans. The Swabians made too many technical errors and were also stopped by Kiel keeper Andreas Wolff on eleven occasions.
