Friday, September 13, 06:44: People in parts of Saxony can expect persistent rain in some areas at the start of the weekend. The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned of heavy, persistent rain. Precipitation amounts will generally be between 30 and 50 litres per square metre, and in some places it may even be as high as 70 litres per square metre.

The warning is valid from Friday at 9 a.m. until Saturday at around 12 p.m. The Eastern Ore Mountains and Upper Lusatia are particularly affected. The greatest danger to life and limb is from flooding of roads, underpasses and buildings near water, as well as possible landslides. The highest temperatures are between 10 and 14 degrees.

There will be devastating amounts of rain in Germany. Forecasts are expecting three times the amount of rain compared to previous floods. Experts hope that expectations will not be met.

Continuous rain in parts of Saxony – warning of flooding

10.42 pm: People in the districts of Bautzen, Görlitz, Central Saxony and Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains must prepare for a lot of rain. The German Weather Service (DWD) issued a severe weather warning for these regions late in the evening, warning of heavy, persistent rain. The warning is valid from Friday 9:00 a.m. until Saturday 12:00 p.m., it said. The greatest danger to life and limb is from flooding of streets, underpasses and buildings near water, as well as possible landslides.

The city of Bautzen announced that it had called in the emergency response team. There is no acute risk of flooding. However, as the water level in the Spree rises, riverbanks could be affected. Residents and businesses near the banks of the Spree should inform themselves. The Bautzen fire department also recommends clearing parking spaces near the Spree and securing the affected properties.

19:05: Between Friday night and Sunday morning, the DWD expects rainfall of 80 to 100 litres per square metre for the area between the Mangfall Mountains and Berchtesgadener Land from 8 p.m. onwards; in areas with heavy rainfall, it could reach up to 140 litres.

From the Werdenfelser Land to the lower Inn and in the Bavarian Forest, the forecast is for 60 to 100 litres per square metre in more than 48 hours, and 40 to 60 litres in the Allgäu. The German Weather Service has issued a red alert severe weather warning for 15 districts in the south.

Flood danger in southern and eastern Bavaria

Due to the continuous rain over several days, the flood warning service is expecting increased water levels over the weekend. This could lead to flooding (warning level 1), it said. In some places, warning level 2 could also be exceeded. Then slight traffic disruptions can be expected due to flooded roads. The low snowfall line at 1300 to 1500 meters above sea level will have a dampening effect on the flood situation.

The flood intelligence service stressed that the weather situation was very dynamic and could change constantly. According to current information, the situation was not expected to worsen beyond Monday.

11.52 am: The Austrian weather service, the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), has now also declared a red alert for eastern Austria. The weather warning will last until next Tuesday, midnight, with daily updates.

Low Anett: Severe weather brings snow, heavy rain and flooding

In the Czech Republic, the authorities have warned of rainfall of up to 300 liters per square meter – in Poland, red alert has already been declared.
