Teen murdered after school brawl, Raleigh police say. Suspect just wanted to ‘scare’ her

A 13-year-old girl was shot and killed in a Raleigh apartment after a fight with her former best friend at school, according to Wake County court documents.

Last April, Raleigh police found Mykia Daniel dead in an apartment on North Hills Drive from a gunshot wound to the head.

Search warrants released this week show that Daniel’s parents called police after receiving news that she might have been killed in the apartment.

In a series of search warrants, police said Daniel and another Wake County student were recently suspended for fighting at school, and other students told school staff that she had died in the fight.

Only five days earlier, police had been called to the same address after a teenager with a weapon had been reported.

According to the arrest warrants, several people were present when the teenager was shot and the intention was to scare her rather than kill her.

The victim’s sister showed police several Instagram posts related to the murder, one of which read: “Noooo man my baby you was my buddy my fucking right hand when shit was happening I don’t give a fuck I love you girl I’m sorry.”

The sister also showed the police an Instagram message from a teenager who apologized and promised to turn himself in.

“I’m sorry girlfriend, I stand up for her, I love her and my sister, I’m sorry, I wanted to say I’m sorry,” it said.

Zylon Abrams, now 17, was charged with first-degree murder in May.

Kimberly Muktarian, a friend and advocate for the family, said the girl had been struggling and her mother had repeatedly sought help from Wake County, but did not say what kind of help it was. Daniels was described in search warrants as a runaway.

“Certainly a lot of questions and devastation, to say the least,” she said in April. “She’s just one that fell through the cracks.”
