Official construction of a production plant that will produce green diesel in the future began on Thursday at the Holborn refinery in Hamburg-Harburg. The plant is scheduled to go into operation in early 2027.

The diesel will be produced using used cooking oil and waste materials. The plant, which is around four and a half football fields in size, will produce 220,000 tonnes of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel annually.

400 million dollars cost

The Holborn Group invested around 400 million dollars in the new plant. The complex includes, among other things, a pre-treatment plant where the residual and waste materials delivered are sorted. The materials then go to the main plant where the diesel is then produced. In addition, the new plant will be connected to the existing infrastructure in order to distribute the sustainable diesel via pipelines.

The plant is the first of its kind in Germany. The Holborn refinery expects that this will save around 800,000 tonnes of CO2 per year in the future.
