Whoopi Goldberg tells JD Vance to ‘shut up’ about Taylor Swift

With no sense of irony, JD Vance called Taylor Swift a “billionaire celebrity” who is “out of touch with the interests and issues of most Americans” after the star endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday night following the debate against Donald Trump.

Whoopi Goldberg was not amused.

“You don’t know what influences them, you don’t know about their money. Shut up, JD,” Goldberg shot back at the vice presidential candidate. The view Thursday. Then, as she took a commercial break, she paused to apologize for her choice of words: “I’m sorry, that was very rude. Stop talking, JD.”

Fans of The view may recall that “stop talking” is something of an iconic phrase for Goldberg, who in 2019 told former host Megan McCain to “stop talking.” Goldberg told the audience that she liked that phrase better than “shut up” and apologized because, “I hate it when people, experts, tell me to shut up. That’s not a nice thing to say.” With that said, Goldberg added, “I take it back, but the implication is – shhh.”

Many on the far right, including Trump, have since expressed dismay at Swift’s support. One commentator called voters who follow Swift’s lead “stupid,” and others, including Megyn Kelly, attacked Swift personally, calling her a “snob” and a “moron.” And yet, Swift’s support for Harris after Tuesday’s debate has already drawn hundreds of thousands of potential Harris supporters to Vote.org.

Trump suggested Swift would “pay a price in the marketplace” for her support, but there is no evidence that would happen, at least not based on the 2020 election, in which Swift supported President Joe Biden. So Vance took the path less traveled by the rest of the right, admitting to “loving” the singer’s music while trying to portray her as out of touch with reality.

Although Goldberg would rather he remained silent, Vance is ultimately helping Harris’ cause by further mobilizing her friendship bracelet following. And with Harris’ team benefiting from that trend and the support itself, Swift’s celebrity could actually sway enough voters to tip the balance in a very close race.

Moderator Joy Behar said during the discussion: “We have one of the biggest stars in the world on the Democratic side and they have Chachi.”
