Darlington County murder suspect shot in self-defense, judge rules

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A man charged in a fatal 2021 shooting in Pee Dee has been released from jail after a judge ruled he fired in self-defense, according to the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Assistant District Attorney Kernard Redmond told WMBF News that Judge Darius Ings granted immunity in this case under the stand-your-ground doctrine.

Darlington County officials charged Ings with murder in the shooting death of Mardrall Addison in June 2021.

Investigators said Ings shot Addison after an altercation at the gas station on W. Bobo Newsome Highway in the Hartsville area.

But after the judge ruled that Ings fired in self-defense, he was released from prison on Sept. 3 after spending nearly three years in the Darlington County Detention Center, according to prison records.

According to public records, Ings faces additional charges unrelated to Addison’s death, including an attempted murder charge filed on January 14, 2020.

Redmond said the attempted murder charge would be filed, but a date had not yet been set.
