ActionSA threatens Simelane with prosecution over VBS-linked loan

ActionSA wrote to the Public Protector asking the regulator to investigate the incident.

Simelane is under pressure to resign after it emerged that she received a loan of more than R500,000 from Gundo Wealth Solutions, an intermediary linked to VBS, during her tenure as mayor of Polokwane.

Athol Trollip, parliamentary leader of ActionSA, says the Ombudsman missed the deadline to respond to the 10 September request.

“This matter is creating a significant impasse in South Africa and cannot continue without meaningful action. I have asked the Public Protector for a response.

“If she doesn’t respond, I have no choice but to press charges. Even my correspondence with the president went unanswered. What we lack is time and space.

“We have a minister responsible for the National Prosecution Service. This is a critical impasse and we need action from this government now.”

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa has received a report from Simelane detailing the circumstances of the loan.

Presidential spokesman Vincent Magwenya said on Tuesday that the president would consider his opinion after examining the report.
