You are cleaning your windshield incorrectly – popular method causes damage

When it comes to cleaning our windshields, we have all tried many methods to get them clean again.

As the winter months approach, ice, condensation and leaves obstructing our vision are becoming more and more of a problem, but one expert is warning drivers against using a viral hack that claims to clear windshields quickly and easily.

At first glance, it might sound worth a try, but it could actually do more harm than good. The TikTok trend recently gained popularity after a potato was used to clean a car’s windshield to prevent fogging and condensation and improve water resistance.

While this may seem like a quick fix, there are some risks that car owners should be aware of. Car expert Robert Webster of My Car Glass has explained exactly why this isn’t such a good idea.

There are some benefits, but there are important reasons why you shouldn’t use the trick. The positive effects don’t last long.

Robert said: “Potatoes contain starch which can form a temporary protective layer on glass that repels water. This makes them a quick solution for short-term waterproofing and helps rainwater to run off the windscreen without leaving a residue.

“The thickness could also potentially reduce fogging, as the resulting protective layer prevents moisture from settling on the surface. But that’s where the benefits end.”

“Starch is known to leave behind a sticky substance, and although it may not be obvious at first, this will build up over time, especially when a surface is exposed to direct sunlight, dirt and other contaminants.

“The result can be a smeared and dirty windshield, which can immediately impair visibility and make driving at night dangerous when oncoming headlights can become a hazard. The risk is even greater in wet and foggy conditions.”

He also noted that the potato’s positive effects are short-lived. Once the starch layer is removed, fog and condensation are likely to reappear.

If the windshield has not been cleaned properly, these problems can be even more serious. Rather than providing a solution to the problem, the TikTok hack could actually cause drivers to have to clean their windshields more often.

In addition, if not done correctly, it can even cause damage to the windshield and wiper blades.

Robert added: “A better solution would be to use specialist products designed for windscreen treatment, tested under weather conditions and considered safe for regular use. These include anti-fog sprays and cleaners with hydrophobic coatings as they are safe for glass and provide long-term protection without the risk of residue or scratches.”
