Legacy Funeral Directors Hull case: Woman no longer a suspect

Humberside Police said investigations into Legacy Funeral Directors were ongoing, but one of the people arrested in March had been released on bail.

Numerous families have received devastating news since police launched a major investigation into funeral directors Legacy Independent Funeral Directors after 35 bodies and suspected human ashes were found at the company’s premises at Hessle Road earlier this year.

Bereaved families in Hull and East Yorkshire are wondering if they have the ashes of their loved ones, with many saying they have been told they definitely have the wrong remains.

Today, Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin said: “This investigation is by far the most challenging and complex as so many people have been affected and are still trying to come to terms with the grief and magnitude of what has happened.

“We are now at a stage where we are consulting with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and there have been discussions between us and specialist CPS lawyers in relation to the investigation.

“Based on these discussions and the review of evidence during the investigation, our senior investigating officer has determined that a woman arrested in March this year is no longer a suspect and has been released on bail without further action being taken.

“The families of the 35 dead have been kept updated and other affected families have been contacted to inform them of the news.

“Every part of this investigation brings untold pain, heartache and suffering to those affected. We will always provide updates on progress and next steps as soon as we can, after those who are so deeply affected have been informed first.

“A man arrested in March and a woman arrested in July remain free on bail while investigations continue.

“I would like to reassure you that our dedicated investigative team continue to work tirelessly to gather and assess evidence and we are continually working to prepare our file for submission to the CPS.

“I would ask people to remember that at the heart of this investigation are devastated families, loved ones and friends, and that our priority will always remain to get them the answers and justice they desperately need and deserve.”
