New and improved interface

One of the most noticeable changes in VirtualBox 7.1 is the redesigned user interface, which now offers two user levels, Basic and Experienced. This allows users to choose between simplified and advanced user interfaces that adapt to different experience levels.

Improved cloud and security features

With stronger OCI integration, VirtualBox now offers a performance dashboard for monitoring cloud VMs and the ability to clone and reset compute instances. Additionally, the Oracle VirtualBox Extension Pack licensing has been updated and the evaluation option has been removed. For users who want to test this feature, the pack is now available through the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud.

In terms of security, VirtualBox 7.1 introduces automatic TLS setup with self-signed certificates if the user does not configure custom certificates to ensure that connections are secure by default.

Advanced network features and compatibility

The update includes a new NAT engine with IPv6 support as well as virtualization support for Linux and BSD VMs on macOS/Arm hosts. For Linux users, the Wayland clipboard is now supported, making it easier to share content between Linux hosts and guests.

For users who need to record their VM sessions, VirtualBox 7.1 has introduced improvements to screen recording that reduce CPU usage and increase performance, especially for Windows guests with the new 7.1 Guest Additions. The update also adds initial support for file transfers via the shared clipboard on Linux and Windows, further improving VirtualBox’s file sharing capabilities.

Important bug fixes and enhancements

This release fixes a number of bugs, including fixes for Hyper-V’s handling of EFLAGS.TF, compatibility issues with Virtio-Net on FreeBSD 12.3 and pfSense 2.6.0, and the ability to add Microsoft DB/KEX certificates to EFI VMs. It also improves accessibility and updates the Qt version of the UI to improve usability.

VirtualBox 7.1 download for many operating systems

The new VirtualBox 7.1 version is compatible with many platforms, including:

  • Windows hosts
  • macOS/Intel hosts
  • macOS / Apple Silicon Hosts
  • Linux Distributions
  • Solaris hosts
  • Solaris 11 IPS hosts

The unattended installation feature has been enhanced to support more modern Linux-based guest operating systems and separate password settings for user and administrator accounts. At the same time, developers are encouraged to move from Python 2.x to Python 3, as VirtualBox plans to drop support for Python 2.x bindings in future releases.
