The new iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are capable of recording 4K videos at up to 120 frames per second. During the presentation of the new models, Apple mentioned that you can also edit the playback speed of videos later. As it turns out, this is not an exclusive feature for the iPhone 16 Pro, but a feature in iOS 18.

The release candidate of iOS 18, which is similar to the final version, also allows the playback speed of videos to be changed retrospectively on older iPhones. This means that the playback speed of a video with a high frame rate can be slowed down. Depending on the iPhone model, 240, 120, 60, 48, 30 and 24 frames per second are available to choose from.

Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro models support 4K video at 120 frames per second in Slo-mo and Video modes. The Playback Pace feature can be used to make adjustments after a video has been recorded. Apple says:

“Users can record 4K 120 fps in slow motion or video mode and adjust the playback speed after recording in the Photos app, including a playback speed of 25 percent, a new half-speed option for a dreamy effect, and an option for playback five times slower, equivalent to 24 fps. Combined with the new image signal processor (ISP) in the A18 Pro, this enables cinema-level frame-by-frame color correction for 4K 120 fps in Dolby Vision. For efficient pro workflows, users can also record 4K 120 fps ProRes and Log recordings directly to external storage media.”

iOS 18 officially launches on September 16th.
