Mother of Apalachee High School shooting suspect apologizes in letter

ATLANTA (WANF/Gray News) – The mother of the suspected Apalachee High School shooter has written a letter to his parents apologizing for her son’s alleged actions.

Wednesday marks a week since a deadly school shooting in Georgia that left two teachers and two students dead and nine others hospitalized.

Marcee Gray said she would take the dead woman’s place if she could – and she also said her son, Colt Gray, is “not a monster.”

Read Marcee Gray’s full letter:

To the parents and families of those affected by the tragic events at Apalachee High School, I want to say that I am sorry from the bottom of my heart. If I could take Mason and Christian’s place, I would do so without hesitation. As a father, I have always said that losing one of my children would be the one thing I could not get over. I feel all of your pain and despair. I grieve and cry with you. My heart breaks for the two teachers who gave their lives in the service of educating and protecting our children. We are all in a living nightmare right now and I will personally never forgive myself for what happened. My son Colt is not a monster. He is my oldest baby. He is quiet, thoughtful, caring, funny and extremely intelligent. Please pray for him and the rest of our family, as I pray for all of you every moment of the day. Love is the only thing that will get us through this tragedy.

Colt is charged with four counts of murder. He is accused of killing teachers Richard Aspinwall (39) and Cristina Irimie (53) as well as students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo (both 14).

His father, Colin Gray, was also arrested in connection with the shooting. He is charged with four counts of manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of child abuse. Investigators believe he gave Colt access to the gun he allegedly used to fire the shots.
