Bitter start for Kohfeldt – two Darmstadt players suffer cruciate ligament tear

Injury shock for the Bundesliga relegated team: Darmstadt 98 will have to do without its two defensive specialists Paul Will (25) and Matthias Bader (27) for the rest of the season. Both regular players have torn cruciate ligaments, as the Hessians announced.

“The diagnoses are incredibly bitter for all of us, especially of course for the two boys, who now have a long road ahead of them and will not be on the pitch again this season,” said sporting director Paul Fernie. “Of course we will support Paul and Matthias in every way we can in their recovery.”

Will suffered a cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus tear in the friendly against FSV Mainz 05 last week, while Bader suffered a cruciate ligament and medial meniscus tear in training on Tuesday. Will was due to undergo surgery on Wednesday, while Bader’s operation is planned for Thursday. After four match days, Darmstadt is second to last in the table with just one point.
