Synology releases new DSM version › ifun.de

The popular NAS provider Synology has released a new version of its DiskStation Manager (DSM). The operating system used on the company’s network storage devices once again has the version number 7.2.2 and probably reminds owners of the devices of the surprising August update.

Last update brought restrictions

Last month, Synology made version 7.2.2 available for download for the first time and, without prior notice, made several important changes that were accompanied by sudden restrictions. One of the most important changes at the time was the removal of the so-called “Video Station”, a software solution from the provider that many users used to manage films, series and home videos. Synology simply recommended switching to alternatives such as Emby, Jellyfin or Plex.

At the same time, however, problems arose when using Plex under DSM 7.2.2, and the display of HEIC photos no longer worked reliably. User feedback was correspondingly negative.

DSM7 2 2

Synology subsequently pulled version 7.2.2 to more clearly communicate details about the DSM and package updates. Today, a new version of version 7.2.2 was made available for download.

Second attempt with slow distribution

According to Synology, the updated version includes a number of updates and bug fixes that are intended to improve the performance and security of the NAS systems. The new features include the transfer of the processing of media codecs such as HEVC (H.265), AVC (H.264) and VC-1 from the servers to end devices. According to Synology, this change is intended to save system resources and increase the efficiency of the devices. However, if end devices do not support these codecs, there may be restrictions on the use of media files.

Exceptions apply to applications such as Surveillance Station, which continues to support server-side processing of AVC streams.

Another important update concerns the area of file system stability and data security. The new DSM version is intended to improve the ability of the file system to recover from errors and increase protection against the deletion of immutable snapshots. In addition, the performance of thick provisioned LUNs has been optimized, especially when storage space is running low.

Some manual updates required

It is particularly important to note that automatic update notifications will not be issued for some Synology models. Users of the affected devices, especially the FS, XS, Plus, and J series, must download the update manually from the Synology Download Center. After installing this update, downgrading to previous DSM versions is no longer possible.

The update will be distributed gradually.
