B/R author suggests Lakers trade for former Celtics starter

As an uneventful and disappointing summer for the Los Angeles Lakers draws to a close, it’s clear they need to do something to take another step or two forward and make the most of LeBron James’s prime.

They need perimeter defense, three-point shooting, and ideally a backup opposite starting point guard D’Angelo Russell, who is often a dangerous player but always seems to be below average in the playoffs and is weak on defense. They probably have very few realistic transfer targets, but Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report suggested a creative one: Marcus Smart of the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies suffered a losing season last year due to a massive injury spree. They are expected to be a playoff contender again next season, if not a contender, but Pincus still believes Smart could be available.

About Bleacher Report:

“The Grizzlies hope to put a dismal 2023-24 season behind them and resume their hunt for the playoffs. The team lost 51 wins and 27 losses due to injuries and off-court issues (most notably with star guard Ja Morant),” Pincus wrote.

“With that in mind, Smart is currently unavailable. But if the team hits a roadblock, Smart’s age, salary and position could make him available at the deadline, as the team has invested heavily in Desmond Bane and Morant. Jaren Jackson Jr. will also receive a new contract starting in 2026-27.

“It’s too early to estimate the asking price, but Russell’s expiring contract plus Hood Schifino currently works as a trade between two teams without Memphis having to pay the luxury tax.”

Smart was never a good or even average 3-point shooter and his career field goal percentage is 38.8%. He has also been somewhat injury prone over the years.

However, the former Boston Celtic player was named to the All-Defensive First Team three times and was named Defensive Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season. He also has a career average of 4.6 assists per game, so he may be able to help James with ball-handling.

There is no ideal transfer target for the Lakers right now. They are probably desperate to make a difference, and the rest of the NBA knows it.
