After an outstanding season in Serie A – in which Bologna finished third and qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 60 years – Ferguson was awarded the prestigious Bulgarelli Award number 8, which recognises him as Italy’s best midfielder.

However, the midfielder suffered a serious knee injury towards the end of last season, which ruled him out of the 2024 European Championship with Scotland.

In the podcast “Let Me Be Frank,” father Derek says he believes Lewis is well ahead in his recovery.

The former Rangers player said: “I got a little bit of footage of him training the other day and it really surprised me at what stage of his rehab he is at the moment.

“When I saw the footage after five and a half months and saw him at that stage, I could see that he had made tremendous progress.

“If you look at an anterior cruciate ligament tear – and it wasn’t just his anterior cruciate ligament, he also tore his medial ligament – it’s anywhere from nine to 12 months.

“But I’ve only just seen the footage. I’ve watched it several times and I wonder if he should be moving like that at this stage. But it’s completely different to what he was doing then.

“I don’t want to be too excited, but inside I am. I’m going over to see him next week for five or six days.

“So the rehab is going very well and they just extended his contract; he’s there until 2029.”
