Carlos Alcaraz admits to taking a break from tennis after the US Open debacle

Spain’s young tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has revealed that he has taken some time off to relax after a disappointing performance at the US Open. Alcaraz last competed at the US Open, where he suffered a bitter second-round defeat to Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. Following the result, the Spaniard admitted that he was nowhere near good enough against his opponents that night.

Alcaraz had previously expressed to the media his desire to go far at the US Open. The world number three also revealed that he has taken a break from tennis after a hectic few months and is now hoping to return to the court in the Davis Cup, where he will represent his country Spain.

“I was with friends, I was able to go to Formula 1… These are things I wanted to do, but the calendar didn’t allow it,” he said. “I would have loved to be in New York, of course, but you have to find time to switch off a little. I had two or three days that were good for me to calm down, but when I calmed down I thought the best thing would be to train again, to do our best, to get very good physically to be able to compete on the [richtigen] to be gone.”

Despite the setback in New York, Alcaraz has had an impressive season, winning two of the four Grand Slams. He won the French Open after defeating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Alcaraz then won the Wimbledon title after defeating Djokovic in the final 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
