Davis Cup team aims for big step

The German Davis Cup team takes what may be the decisive step towards the knockout phase against Chile.

A win against the South Americans on Thursday in Zhuhai (5 a.m. German time) could be enough to make it into the quarter-finals if the opposition performs well.

“It will be a very difficult task against Chile. I believe that they are nominally the strongest team in terms of individual players,” said Kohlmann after the 3-0 opening win against Slovakia. “But I still believe that we have a good chance in both games.”

The Chileans suffered a setback on Wednesday. After the two singles matches, defeat was already certain against the USA, who Yannick Hanfmann, Maximilian Marterer and Co. will face at the end of the group phase in China on Saturday.

The first two teams from the group of four will advance to the round of eight, which will be played as part of the finals in Malaga from 19 to 24 November.
