Moderate TV ratings for the US Open

No, many people in the USA in particular did not watch the decisive phase of the 2024 US Open on TV, even though there were chances for two home victories.

Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz also couldn’t pull off the TV quotes

The final weekend of the US Open has the same “problem” year after year when it comes to TV quotes: Just when the big trophies are at stake in Flushing Meadows, the National Football League season begins. This league is by far the most popular in the USA. And it will play its first full day of matches on the men’s final Sunday at the US Open.

There is no contesting that. Not even when Taylor Fritz, a local hero, has the chance to lift the winner’s trophy at the last major of the year 21 years after Andy Roddick. Only 1.7 million viewers wanted to see the final against Jannik Sinner.

The NFL also plays on Friday – exceptionally

The big local clash between Fritz and Frances Tiafoes on Friday evening American time also had (for the first time) an opponent that was too strong. The NFL had invited itself to Brazil and sent two teams, the Philadelphia Eagles and especially the Green Bay Packers, that had attracted great interest even beyond the respective city limits. The result: only 1.8 million viewers for Fritz versus Tiafoe.

On Saturday, the NFL takes its traditional break in the early stages. But that didn’t help the quotes from Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka. After all, for most sports fans, Saturday is traditionally dedicated to college football from the end of August. Only 1.6 million tennis fans had something else in mind.
