Apple: New firmware for the AirPods Pro 2 is ready

After a beta test lasting several months, Apple has made a new firmware for the AirPods Pro 2 (Amazon advertising partner link*) available for download – the current version is now 7A294 (previously 6F7). There are several new features in conjunction with macOS Sequoia 15, iOS/iPadOS 18 and watchOS 11. The update is available for both the older model with MagSafe/Lightning charging cradle and the current model with MagSafe/USB-C charging cradle.

The update is installed automatically; there is no system function to initiate the process manually. Apple says: “Firmware updates are deployed automatically while AirPods Pro are charging and within Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is connected to Wi-Fi.”

It may take some time for the update to arrive on all devices. The updated firmware version can be found in iOS/iPadOS via “Settings => Bluetooth => AirPods => More info” (in macOS via “System information => Bluetooth”).

The manufacturer says of the new features: “AirPods are one of the best ways to interact with Siri on the go, and Siri Interactions make the experience even more personal, private, and convenient. AirPods Pro users can simply nod their head or shake their head slightly to respond to Siri announcements. This is especially useful in crowds or quiet environments where you might want to speak loudly. Machine learning on the H2 chip allows users to accept or decline interactions, interact with messages, manage notifications, and more through Siri – all without speaking.

Because of their concept, AirPods are very well suited to staying in touch with friends, colleagues and relatives. To ensure the best possible call quality regardless of the environmental conditions, voice isolation is coming to AirPods Pro. This groundbreaking feature is already available on Mac, iPhone and iPad. Machine learning, which runs on the H2 chip in the simultaneous AirPods Pro and on the paired iPhone, iPad or Mac, isolates the voice, improves its quality and removes loud background noise for listeners – such as wind noise on the caller’s side.

AirPods’ excellent sound quality also makes them perfect for gaming, and new updates make the experience even better. Personalized 3D Audio with dynamic head tracking will be available for gaming on AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max for the immersive listening experience customers know and love when listening to music or watching movies and TV shows. When gamers use AirPods Pro, they now get the best wireless audio latency Apple has ever enabled for mobile gaming. AirPods Pro users get improved voice quality, including 16-bit, 48 kHz audio when speaking to their teams and other players.

Additionally, this update includes performance improvements for personalized volume with AirPods Pro 2.

macOS Sequoia 15, iOS/iPadOS 18 and watchOS 11 will be released early next week and are prerequisites for the AirPods Pro innovations. Apple is preparing to introduce hearing health features this fall.
