As she continues to deal with “predatory” behavior from her fans, Chappell Roan has hired security because of a stalker – which is “so lame,” she said in a new Rolling Stone cover story after speaking out on social media about some fans’ lack of boundaries. Since her meteoric rise, Roan said fans have tracked her flight details to ambush her at Seattle airport, and one man targeted her to get an autograph, to the point where she was later “sobbed and screamed.” And she said a fan even kissed her without her consent in August. She finally posted her TikToks about fame after her father’s phone number was leaked. “I don’t want to be agoraphobic,” Roan said Rolling Stone“That is [how] most of my colleagues [feel]. Every damn artist is on this site. Everyone is uncomfortable with fans. Some people just have more patience. I sure as hell don’t.”

Fortunately does has a number of other musicians on her side. Roan said she has received support from artists such as Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Hayley Williams of Paramore and Miley Cyrus. Lorde advised her not to stand out at airports and Katy Perry told her not to read comments (which she knows all about). Mitski emailed her “to humbly welcome her to the world’s shittiest exclusive club.” She had coffee with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus of boygenius, commiserated with Phoebe Bridgers and had dinner with the band Muna. Even fellow rising star Sabrina Carpenter shared a conversation with Roan.

“It was just good to know that there was someone else who felt that way,” Roan said. While she noted that she’s heard fewer male artists, that list includes Troye Sivan, Orville Peck, Noah Kahan and, of course, Elton John. “I’m very protective of her,” said John, who invited Roan and her producer Dan Nigro out for pizza over the summer.

“I don’t want to brag about names,” Roan added. “I want to tell you that there are girls out there who are good people and who help other girls. I’m naming them because people just need to know that people are good people.”
