People on social media are laughing about how expensive the PS5 Pro is

After months of leaks and speculation, Sony has finally unveiled the PS5 Pro, but the console also comes with a hefty price tag: $700.

Billed as a more powerful, graphically enhanced version of the original PS5, the Pro’s price is sure to raise eyebrows. At $700, it’s almost as expensive as the base model iPhone 16, which is in line with other moves in Sony’s recent push toward higher pricing, from being one of the first to charge $70 for games to raising prices on DualSense controllers.

It’s no surprise that the news sparked reactions on X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, where users are already criticizing Sony for what many consider to be a blatant rip-off.

The biggest upgrade on the PS5 Pro is its ability to handle high-fidelity modes at a constant 60 frames per second, which sounds great on paper. But considering the standard PS5 was already able to achieve similar results by sacrificing some resolution, it feels less like a groundbreaking advancement. Many users are already wondering if slightly improved graphics justify the $700 price tag.

Mashable Speed of Light

In fact, you could easily get a custom-built PC with an RTX 3070 on Facebook Marketplace for that money – and that’s exactly what some people (i.e. me) do instead.

The PS5 Pro also does away with the disc drive and, to top it all off, the vertical stand is sold separately – a move that is already causing debate among fans. Since there are no major PS5 exclusives that push the limits of the hardware, many are wondering if the upgrade is even worth it.

It should be noted that Sony has an excellent selection of first-party titles from God of War, The Last of Us, Marvel’s Spider-Manand the recently published AstroBot.

Aside from the fact that “PS5 doesn’t have games,” the Pro is expensive and looks a bit silly. Only time will tell if this will be a flop for Sony or not.
