American activist murdered in the West Bank was shot dead by Israeli forces

Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26-year-old from Seattle, was killed Friday after a demonstration against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, according to Jonathan Pollak, an Israeli protester who witnessed the shooting.

The military’s investigation found that it was “very likely that she was indirectly and unintentionally hit by (the Israeli army’s) fire, which was aimed not at her but at the main instigator of the riot.”

The White House had previously said it was “deeply troubled” by the death of Ms Eygi, who was also a Turkish citizen, and called on Israel to investigate the incident.

In his report to the Associated Press, Pollak said the shooting occurred about half an hour after the apparent “clashes” had died down.

Ms. Eygi, a volunteer with the activist group International Solidarity Movement, was taking part in a weekly demonstration against settlement expansion that has been taking place for years and has often been met with Israeli crackdowns and stone-throwing by protesters.

The killing came amid a wave of violence in the West Bank, where more than 690 Palestinians have been killed.
