Apple: Next iPhone era with ChatGPT and brand new button

iPhone 16: New chip, AI, new camera system and more battery life

The new versions of the iPhone 16 provide users with various new highlights. The iPhone 16, the iPhone Plus, the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max are available for pre-order from September 13th. Prices range from 949 to 1,449 euros. One of the key innovations in the new generation is the A18 chip. This promises greater efficiency and a longer battery life. New colors have also been provided for the iPhone design, while the glass in the device and the Ceramic Shield are said to be significantly harder than in previous versions and smartphones from other companies. The Pro versions also have significantly larger displays to choose from. 6.3″ for the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9″ for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This is the largest iPhone display ever.

In addition to various design updates, users can look forward to camera and performance updates in particular. Last but not least, there is the integration of ChatGPT, which is designed for the new iPhones. When using Siri and other functions, users can optionally access OpenAI’s AI chatbot to solve various tasks with the help of Apple Intelligence or to quickly find elements on the smartphone. You can have emails summarized or even find old videos with minimal search time.

Other benefits include the creation of Genmojis by entering the idea of an emoji and the visual search for information. The big drawback: Apple Intelligence is currently only available in English and is not available at all on iPhones in Europe.

In addition to the AI updates supported by the A18 or A18 Pro chip, the new camera control via an action button is particularly attracting attention. This is one of the key innovations for function control. The button on the bottom right edge of the device comes with “an innovative new way to quickly open the camera, take a photo, or start recording a video.” Apple further explains the controls:

[…] They have a tactile switch that enables clicking, a high-precision pressure sensor for light pressing, and a capacitive sensor that supports touch interactions. A new camera preview helps users frame the image and adjust other options – such as zoom, exposure, and depth of field – to create impressive photos or videos by simply swiping their finger across the camera controls. Later this fall, the camera controls will receive an update with a two-stage shutter button to automatically adjust focus and exposure with a light press […].

The Pro versions feature a 48MP Fusion camera with a faster, more efficient Quad Pixel sensor and the Apple Camera Interface for 4K 120 fps, which allows video recording in Dolby Vision. A 5x telephoto and an ultra-wide angle camera are also part of the Pro experience.

The iPhones have received numerous other updates: studio-quality microphones, the ability to send live video feeds via satellite in an emergency, sustainable product design, and the option to use iOS 18 as a free software update starting September 18. Wireless charging is also said to be faster on the iPhone 16.
