Media: Vingegaard is said to want Giro start for the 2025 season

Encouraged by the Pogacar double?

10.09.2024 | (rsn) – The Belgian daily newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN) will have learned that Jonas Vingegaard (Visma – Lease a Bike) is planning to make his first start at the Giro d’Italia in 2025. As HLN reports, the Dane is said to have already indicated this wish to his team.

However, a decision has not yet been made – this is not surprising, as no team makes any final decisions about planning the season for the following year before the route presentations for the major tours, which are expected at the end of October (Tour de France) and the beginning of November (Giro d’Italia).

Vingegaard has ridden the Vuelta a Espana twice and the Tour de France four times in his career so far. In the 2020 Vuelta, his first three-week tour, he finished 46th in the overall rankings as a helper to overall winner Primoz Roglic. In his Tour debut in 2021, Vingegaard finished second overall behind Tadej Pogacar. In 2022 and 2023 he won the Tour de France and in 2023 he then finished second in the Vuelta behind teammate Sepp Kuss. In 2024, after his serious fall in April, he came second in the Tour again.

If Vingegaard really does start the Giro d’Italia for the first time in 2025, then he will certainly want to win it. Nevertheless, it is hard to imagine that the Dane and his team will then forego the Tour de France. Pogacar’s flawed double this year is more likely to have given him confidence that the combination of the Tour of Italy and France is feasible again.

In any case, Vingegaard has already completed the 2024 season. He will not take part in the mountain world championships in Zurich. After the Tour de France, he rode the Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa, where he did not see the finish, and then won the Tour de Pologne. After that, his cycling year ended in mid-August.
