Current status of investigation into sexual assault in Swindon town centre

A 19-year-old man from Royal Wootton Bassett has been arrested on suspicion of rape following an incident believed to have occurred in the early hours of Saturday 7 September.

A cordon remained in place on Queen Street between Fleet Street and Carr Street for several hours while officers investigated.

Police confirmed that at the time of writing no one had been charged in connection with the alleged offence and that investigations were ongoing while the suspect remained in custody.

An appeal has been launched asking witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.

A police spokesman said: “Officers investigating an alleged sexual assault have arrested a 19-year-old man from Royal Wootton Bassett on suspicion of rape.”

“He is currently in police custody.

“We would like to hear from anyone who was in Swindon town centre in the early hours of Saturday morning and may have seen anything suspicious.
